I think the best defense is a new feature of 1.7f for open lists.
 
Subscription= Open,Confirm
 
sends a confirmation message to the requestor.  Unless he/she receives
it and responds correctly the subscription doesn't happen.
 
If most|all of the Confidential= No and Subscription= Open lists
were set up that way Mr. Nuttal would just have buried himself
in confirmation requests and  bothered the rest of us hardly at
all.
