I am running Listserv on a Linux system. When I created the list from the WEB interface the listname truncated any name longer than 32 chars. This then created the list and archives in Linux with only the 32 chars. The limit tation is not in Linux. I test that. The limit is in Listserv. So the manual is wrong.
So is your answer 32 is the limit or not?

On platforms other than VM there is no limit on the length of list
names. The site manager's manual says:

| The length of the list name (that is, the name of the list file and
| thus the "official" name of the list) is restricted as follows:
|
| VM: 8 characters
| Non-VM: unlimited (starting with 1.8c; but see below)
|
| If you need a longer list name for a list running on a VM server, you
| should use the List-ID= keyword (see Appendix B).
|
| PLEASE NOTE CAREFULLY that L-Soft recommends using names of 32
| characters or less whenever possible as they provide for correct
| alignment of the results returned by certain commands. Very long
| (program generated) list names are likely to conflict with mail system
| limits and L-Soft recommends other solutions to the problem of
| dynamically generated lists. As a rule, list names in excess of 70
| characters are likely to result in mail delivery problems.

Thanks,
