Does LISTSERV 1.8c use more "Received:" headers than 1.8b did?
I now seem to be getting "554 Too many hops 18 (17 max)" once in
a while, and 1.8c always seems to be involved.

One case was on my list was whenever user A posted -- the copy sent
to user B would bounce to me because of this. Both users had a few
hops inside their universities, and the hops in TREARN made it
too many. (User A hasn't posted in a while so I don't know
whether this still occurs.) I don't think it happened before
they went to 1.8c.

Another case occurs with this list (occasionally) and some others.
I subscribe at ISP X, but often forward to ISP Y (for various
reasons). The 18th hop occurs at ISP Y, and the mail bounces back
to my ISP X account (not the list). Of course, with just another
header or two, ISP X would bounce it back to the list owner and
I'd never see it; I can't tell whether that happens or not.

Headers from a recent (yesterday) bounced message are below for
those interested in reading such things. It came out of
listmail.cc.uga.edu with 15 hops already "used" -- one too
many for the forward to succeed.

Is this 17 (or 18) a sendmail limit? Can it be configured?
(If LISTSERVs need this many hops, perhaps the sendmail folks
should raise this number so that all it catches are true loops.)

I'll probably end up having procmail at ISP X change all the
Received headers to X-Received (or something) before forwarding,
but it seems to me that we're still operating awfully close to the
cliff's edge here.

Cheers,
