Actually, I've just run into a totally non-usenet place I'd like the
duplicate posting dropped.  We have several lists we use here for
informing staff of changes to the system, status of items, etc.
Then others are kept informed, and we can use LISTSERV's database engine
for searches.  There are something like 7 or 8 of these lists.  We also
have one super list, that is subscibed to all the other lists.  That way,
if you want to search for a change across all areas, you can.  Currently,
when I post to 2 of the sub-lists, the super-list gives me back the
duplicate posting, which I then discard.  I'm so use to discarding the
duplicate, I never think of it as a problem anymore.  I suppose I could
convert the 7 or 8 lists to topics, but I'm not sure that would give
me want we want either.
