Then topics on a single list are probably the way to go if there's 
going to be a lot of mixing and matching. With 3 lists, it's not so 
terrible. If you have lists A, B, C, then you need only 4 super-lists 
to cover every possible combination: ABC, AB, AC, BC. But what if you 
decide to add another list to the mix? You would need 11 superlists 
to cover every combination. Add yet another list and it really gets 
unwieldy.

If you use topics, you only need one list, and you can have up to 23 
topics. 

If you don't like having the topics listed on the Subject: line, 
there are ways to hide them (the easiest one being to use LISTSERV 
Maestro to send out your mailings, but there are ways without 
Maestro) [And speaking of Maestro, the free Maestro offer expires Dec 
21, per the latest issue of LISTSERV at Work newsletter].
