I went from 8.11.6 to 8.12.8 the other night and nothing special happened.
I use a postfix relay machine for outbound, though, so I am not seeing the
full issue picture. Nevertheless, going to 8.12.8 from various releases was
not very hard, once you get your head around the permissions and have a
saved .mc file. 

I really must stress this -- never EVER touch sendmail.cf! Just build it
from macros. It made me able to sleep most part of the night between monday
and tuesday, confident that my customisations had survived the transition.
