(the last time i looked at the stats page listserv.acsu wasn't on it.)

i'm sorry, i wasn't clear enough. i currently drive about 250 copies of
sendmail but it's done rather crudely so one second i might have 300 copies
running and 10 minutes later 130 and five minutes after that 330. if
someone already has a queue driver that understands sendmail i'd be
interested. i also feel i don't know enough about listserv to adjust the
way it runs. if lsmtp will have 900-2,000 smtp connections open at once do
you use listserv to setup delivery transactions in groups of 100 (or
whatever value is useful) or do you do something completely different that
gives you useful work for all those delivery threads?

It's not that simple unfortunately. If one could keep the load flat
constant over a 24h cycle, even a small machine would do wonders. But
most of the mail comes during business hours and in general if your 24h
average is X deliveries per hour, your most busy hour will show about 3X
deliveries.
