Thanks, Francoise!  I think this did the trick: I put Language=Exchange on
a test list (which otherwise had the same settings as the production
list), and the listowner was able to send the .doc attachment to it.
The owner never mentioned Exchange when I asked about her mail setup,
and I still don't know if she does (no reply as yet).
