From what I saw in you message, it is the client's mail transfer agent (MTA) that does not like mail
from LISTSERV's mailer.
On a whim for your second problem, you might try to issue the command
SERVE userid@node
Then, regardless of the above LISTSERV command, have the user (client) email the LISTSERV@host and
YOU, the one line body-of-text (no sig)

If they get back a "You're Welcome" then LISTSERV is processing correctly for that client. While you
are at it, inspect the original THANKS email, looking at all headers and see if a SENDER is present
that is different from the FROM: If so, that may be problematic.
Then have client email the listname@host (also BCC: you) and see if it is distributed to the list. If
not, then ask client to provide bounce with all headers.
