You are right - these @#$%&*&%$#@ 'alleged listservs' are a real pain
 
One is in use at LEHIGH.EDU to service VIRUS-L.  Just try to issue
   SET VIRUS-L NOMAIL to that thing and see what you get.
 
I am going to try to unsub - but I doubt that even that will work
 
And don't count on the help/instructions that are available for the
@#$%&*@ thing being accurate either.
 
A 'conventional INTERNET mailing list' (if there truly is such a thing)
is better.
