Well, when you move a list the digest/index doesn't follow. It's
difficult to move these things around because the database reference
numbers might not be the same on the two hosts, the list might be called
differently, and on different operating systems and versions the disk
files might not have the same format and may not be FTPable directly. One
option is to create the new list and leave the old list alive until
midnight. It sends its digest and everything and then you close it.
Another option is to kill the old list right away and either repost the
day's digest to the new list or save it in a file and tell people how to
get it. Or you could attempt to move the digest by transferring over the
DIGEST and SUBJECTS file and adding an entry to DIGESTS FILE A1 or
equivalent with listname followed by two zeroes. This however is not
guaranteed to work, again it may not work from unix to VMS for instance
because the file systems are different. In most cases it will work from
VM though, because there is special provision in the non-VM code to
handle VM file format to make migration easier. At any rate, entering the
"New-List=" keyword effectively kills the old list and turns it into a
simple forwarding facility that won't accept postings or subscriptions
any more.
