One of my "dreams" would be a complete two-way gateway between a Usenet
News group and a list... But, there are some problems. The basic
requirement of USENET/Netnews news is that every article be uniquely
identified. There is not unique identification across the LISTSERV lists,
peers, etc. At least I think all the arguments boil down to this...
With the flooding algorithm that USENET/Netnews uses you may receive
an article several times. Your NETNEWS server must be able to know if
it has received it before. For USENET/Netnews I think they use a combination
of "node" (or host name) and a local sequence number to keep track of
articles...
If there should be more than one gateway from a listserv list into a
group, then we could get multiple copies of items. And of course loop
detection would get more interesting, etc...
I have heard of one person who is supposedly gatewaying stuff. Also,
there are at least two implementations of "Netnews" for IBM VM systems -
one from Princeton and one from Penn State. These are discussed in the
list NETNWS-L@NDSUVM1 on BITNET (note missing e in nws).
Right now many of the BITNET lists are distributed via netnews on
BITNET Only in groups such as "bit.listserv.lstsrv-l" (where I usually
read this group...).
