If you're worried about the number of files in a directory, then you
have two potential trouble spots.

You've already heard how to keep the number of notebook files under
control -- put each one in a directory of its own, and don't use
file-per-message notebooks.

The other spot is the directory which holds all of the per-list
directories. Simply develop a directory structure based on the first
several letters of the list name, so that the archive directory for
LSTSRV-L would be .../L/S/T/LSTSRV-L/.
