On platforms other than VM there is no limit on the length of list
names. The site manager's manual says:
| The length of the list name (that is, the name of the list file and
| thus the "official" name of the list) is restricted as follows:

| VM: 8 characters
| Non-VM: unlimited (starting with 1.8c; but see below)

| If you need a longer list name for a list running on a VM server, you
| should use the List-ID= keyword (see Appendix B).
|
| PLEASE NOTE CAREFULLY that L-Soft recommends using names of 32
| characters or less whenever possible as they provide for correct
| alignment of the results returned by certain commands. Very long
| (program generated) list names are likely to conflict with mail system
| limits and L-Soft recommends other solutions to the problem of
| dynamically generated lists. As a rule, list names in excess of 70
| characters are likely to result in mail delivery problems.
