Steve Bellovin was one of the creators of NetNews in the 1979-1980
timeframe, while a grad student at UNC Chapel Hill. Rick Adams did
B-News in 1984, and NNTP came along in March 1986. So in 1984, News
was moving along, but via UUCP still....
