Well, I found the issue. The archives I got from the previous site must
have been on a DOS machine. When I ran dos2unix on all the old archive
files the search function started working correctly.
Thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions to try. I hope you all
remember what happened here so the next time I ask this someone can remind
me what I need to do. :-)
