Well, grovelling aournd in /usr/include/sys/errno.h shows that
error 9 is 'EBADF' - meaning the file descriptor was bad.  I'm
not sure how *that* happened - but it probably means that somewhere
in the Listserv code,  either the file descritor variable got clobbered,
or the file was opened for writing instead of reading, or similar.

It's remotely possible that in fact the problem was caused at file
open time, not file read time.
