We use IPMonitor and I only test listserv to see if it is responding on
port 25.  More advanced monitors could test to see if mail is actual
routing by sending a thank you and waiting for the reply.

What is Sitescope capable of doing?  Checking for disk space, load, etc
are good ideas if you can.
