OK, thanks.

Seems like this should be a simple thing, but from the sounds of it, changing the name is trouble.

The user said I could just create a new list with the new name, so I will do that. The old list doesn’t have much history and we’ll keep it available in case the archives are needed.

Thanks,

Brent

Subject: Re: Changing the List Title of a List

On this list, the name of the list is "LSTSRV-L"

The Title is "LISTSERV Site Administrators’ Forum” and is the name you see in the TO field of incoming messages from the list. (Not “FROM”, as I mis-spoke earlier).

The title is the first line of the list configuration.

The name is essentially the file name prefix for all of the files used by listserv to manage the list.

Thanks much for the reply.

I guess I don’t understand the difference between “List Title” and “Name of the List”.

In the List Configuration I thought that would change both. Part of the help text for List Title is below. Notice how it says that it is also used as the “name” part of the list’s email address…

Choosing a descriptive title is important for public lists because it will be displayed when people search the online catalog of LISTSERV lists<http://www.lsoft.com/catalist.html>. Potential subscribers should be able to determine the purpose of your list by reading the title.

The list title is also used as the "name" part of the list's email address in the mail headers of messages distributed to the list. It is also used in the Web interface and in some administrative messages.

Thanks,

Brent

As long as you are only changing the list title (and not the name of the list) the only noticeable issue will be that archived messages will retain the old title in the FROM field. Changing the name of a list is a different story.

Hi,

This may seem like a no-brainer, but I’ve been asked to change the List Title of a List that has been around for a while (so it has archived posts).

I researched it a bit and there don’t seem to be any “gotcha’s”, but want to make sure since I’m new at this.

Q. Are there any implications of renaming a list?

Q. Will the archives continue to follow the list, meaning that the history will still be there (I assume they’ll just be kept in the current location…)?

Thanks,

Brent
