Eric:
I realize you are no longer supporting 1.7f but I wanted to be sure the
bug described wasn't propogated into 1.8a where it might affect your
bottom line. ;-) I thought other LSTSRV-L subscribers might want to
know about this if they don't already. Of course maybe this is a known
problem...

Subscribers subscribed to ROOTS-L with Mail= Index have reported errors
in the "daily" index lists they have received. The item numbers do not match
the item numbers of the database index output. When they try to retrieve one
of the items from the index they get the wrong item (in a recent case the
numbers were off by 3).

Below are two of the index distributions for the list. The 1st one is ok.
The 2nd one is the next Index output with errors. The third item is the output
of a search * in ROOTS-L.32350-32430 INDEX output for the relevant time.
Here is what appeared to happen.

1. Sample index 1 (special index for first part of 11/04/93) ends with item
    32392.

2. Sample index 2 (final issue for 11/04/93) starts with 32396. Three numbers
were skipped. The prototype JOB item numbers listed are incorrect too
(at the end of the index). They start at 32396 instead of 32393.

3. The item numbers listed in index 2 are 3 items larger than they should be
UNTIL we reach 32420. At that point they item numbers match the actual
database numbers. Therefore anyone ordering daily index items 32396
through 32419 will get a different item than the one they intended.

4. Comparing the master database item list at the end we find three items
were omitted from the index 2: The real 32417-32419.

5. Note that these are dated with the previous month.

I suspect LISTSERV was confused by change in month. But since the
only date LISTSERV records is the date of origin this can vary for up
to 24 hours before the new month (due to time zone differences) and
for days afterward (due to mail delays). I'm not sure if LISTSERV had
intended to list the items in date order and "forgot about them" when
the index was created or just what happened.
