This is incorrect. You don't need to keep logs to enable digests. The
digest data only represent a day's (or week's) traffic and is thus very
small when compared to the typical archives, which keep growing until old
files are removed. LISTSERV will save the digest data in a temporary
file, which is reset every day (or week, etc).
You do need archives to enable the index code, though. This is because an
index only lists the date, size, poster and subject, and does not contain
the actual text. The user orders the items he is interested in from the
list archives.
