Perhaps we can try to clarify the use of terms - or at least the way I understand and use them anyway.... in my experience, when an owner uses the ADD command (without the Quiet option), the new subscriber is sent a *notification* that they have been placed on the list. When the list subscription is Open,Confirm, and someone submits a SUBSCRIBE command, then they receive a *confirmation* message to which they must respond before actually being placed on the list.

I think it would be nice if the ADD command had an option to trigger the "confirmation" process rather than simply placing the user on the list and sending a notification. For some lists being setup here, the owner wants to ADD everybody rather than sending out subscribe instructions, and sometimes their collections of email addresses have some inaccuracies - and as the LSMTP postmaster I wind up getting the delivery error reports. Not a really great big huge deal, I suppose, since the owner gets a report too - but having only the confirmation item failing instead of all the list traffic (since some bad addresses don't 'fail' until the 5-day retry expires) would reduce the scope of my annoyance somewhat.

James,

I've run the ADD command using

Subscription=Open,Confirm
Subscription=Open
Subscription=By Owner

Every time, I receive a confirmation message. I took a look at the List
Owner's Manual and could not find any option to use to send cofirmations to
some subscribers yet none to others.

Am I way off the mark here?

The question should have read ADD command.

Read the "Q" and then the "A" I'm a bit confused. I believe the WEB
interface requires a emailed (to the supposed subscriber) CONFIRMATION
when a new subscription is entered regardless of the second operand of
the SUBSCRIPTION= keyword.

Or perhaps the question was "when a list-owner does an ADD, can it force
a confirmation?"  (answer: No).
