I made some kind of goof in trying to change the password for one of
the lists I manage. I edited the file listname.header which had as the
first two lines:

PUT LISTNAME LIST PW=OLDPW
PW=NEWPW
*
* rest of header
*
*

I got a message back from the listserv saying that the password was incorrect.
Listserv will now not recognize either the old or the new password as being
correct.
I realize that I can use a personal password in lieu of the list password,
but the fact that the list password does not work bothers me. I want to
fix this situation. So, what did I do wrong and how can I fix it? I thought
I had followed the correct syntax to change the list password, according
to the documentation that I read. The listserv is a 1.8a, BTW.
