How to make a list unlisted, but not subscription by owner

Is there a set of parms that can be specified to make a list subscribable
by anyone, but have it not appear when someone does a LIST command?
 
We're getting several classes who want lists set up, but the instructors
don't want to hand-subscribe the students.  But neither do they want
random riff-raff subscribing to or posting to the list.  Seems like
leaving the list open for subscription by anyone, but not advertising
its existence is what I'm after.
