this happens for lists which are not redistribution lists as well.  I have
tried to track this down for several subscriptions on SAS-L and in all
cases it resulted from following the instructions contained in an
Internet "list of lists" (e.g. ARPA SIGS).  The instructions typically
tell the user to send mail to LISTSERV%<node>[log in to unmask]
I have never found a case where a user really wanted the note to go
to the Internet and back.  I wonder whether LISTSERV should automagically
fix these subscription requests?
