Hi Janice. We ran into similar issues.
Listserv had no room to work (write temp files).
Some of our long-term lists have hefty archives; we were running low on disk space, cache.
Our solutions…
Modify user behavior:
• We advise subscribers from the hefty lists to run multiple searches,
spanning only a few years at a time. Some years back, a user
tried to run a search against 15 years worth of archives during prime time!
Maintenance:
• We prune the archives periodically – around the holidays and
usually the beginning of summer. I keep a copy offline and
give the listowners a copy of archives that were pruned.
• Added more disk space; increased cache. We have not had any
issues since.
