I completely agree. I also feel that nothing should be mandatory. Many of
the lists that are hosted on the Listserv I manage are used by people with
little or no experience using computers. The subscription confirmation
process confuses them very much. These tend to be lists for course
instruction and it is essential that the subscription process be as
seemless as possible. I am working on implementing automatic subscriptions
for course lists, but in the meanwhile, it helps to be flexible with
issues such as subscription confirmations.
