The following is an extract from a message posted on INfO-NETS. Could
anyone explain to me how this happends ? Is there a point in sending to
a nearest backbone server through the destination node ?

Generally, but NOT always if there's a closer LISTSERV downstream, the
delivering LISTSERV (the node just before your own system's mailer header),
is as close as any. I subscribe to one list which originates on YaleVM
(one hop away) which sends my list mail to Marist (also one hop away)
THROUGH my host and then Marist sends it to me (?!!). The DISTribute
table may not be optimized for that one :-) Marist IS a backbone (probably
accounts for the behavior).
