   We too have seen some messages end up in BASE64 encoded format.  In one
case the messages were from the same contributor and I think they even
passed through an editor where they "looked ok".  But I was told there must
have been some "8-bit" data in the message which forced it to be BASE64
encoded on it's way to the list.
