Peter,

Please don't blame the idiocy of the people who demanded that all mail
gatewayed to .FR by the official BITNET/.FR gateway be left unconverted
on Marty or LISTSERV. A properly configured SMTP gateway escapes all
BITNET addresses as Marty described. If the French think they can control
sendmail.cf on tens of thousands of hosts and can get away with breaking
the rules, that is their problem. It is bad enough that people with such
ridiculous beliefs are in a position to place demands on the site that
gateways the messages and later blame all problems on "punch card
technology" without giving the impression that this is a general problem
LISTSERV should solve to bypass this self-inflicted idiocy.
