Since it's AIX, you're probably running Sendmail.  Please note that as far
as I know, the IBM-supplied Sendmail will *not* do probes correctly, as a
patch is needed.  I'd recommend upgrading to Sendmail 8.9.1, and applying the
following: ftp://ftp.lsoft.com/LISTSERV/UNIX/CONTRIB/sendmail-probe.8.9.1.patch

all of our tricks and tuning tips on there. if you still have
problems after that, let me know.

P.S. Ben and the other LSoft guys - the 8.9.1 patch I sent you should
work on 8.9.2 when it comes out...
