Yes, you can ask for the archives in email. It is in the manual.
The archives will be sent in plain text, with a separator line
between each mail. Small sed script is all it takes to make them
into a mbox file. Or an awk pipeline to make them into Maildir
files.

Text files are what all email (unless it is munged by database
storage) essentially is, so that is what you get ;-) If I was given that
task, I'd load the mbox file into a IMAP server and then open it
over IMAP using one of those fluffy clients..
