Margaret,
We did have a similar problem here, adding email addresses which took the
subscription mail over the "standard" 80 character limit.
With your limit being 41 it sounds as though it might be the mailer that is
splitting the line when it sends it to listserv, then listserv cannot
interpret the line correctly. At least that is what was happening here. We
were using Outlook though so . . .
Anyway we worked around it by either splitting the subscription request
across multiple lines, or by sending the mail in HTML which seemed to work
okay.

p.s. Think yourself lucky, i am just trying to add an old X400 address of 93
characters.

That reminds me for all the support staff out there can LSMTP handle X400
addresses ?, I assume it's RFC compatible and should not have any problems
but I haven't tried it yet.
