It appears that your LISTSERV is actually making contact with an SMTP
server, but it seems that server is the LISTSERV system, not your mail
server. In the log clip you posted, the message did not "die in
LISTSERV" but was refused by the system LISTSERV was trying to deliver
to - because that system did not have a matching local user for the mail
recipient.

What do you have for the SMTP_FORWARD keyword in your SITE.CFG file?
You *should* have the fully-qualified name of an SMTP server that is
willing to receive mail from LISTSERV and relay that mail to the
destination; this should NOT be the name of the machine running your
LISTSERV setup. Also check for SMTP_FORWARD_.... keyword values.

Have you stopped/started LISTSERV since making changes?

Messages leaving LISTSERV do not go via SMTPL, that is for incoming
only. To send messages, LISTSERV wants to make contact with an SMTP
server other than itself, and that server must be configured to accept
mail from LISTSERV addressed to any destination.

I have taken lsmtp off my server and am trying to go back to using
smtpl with a smtp forward of our mail server. Problem is I can't get it
to work. In looking at the logs messages come in and are processed but
not sent out by smtpl. Example below, I have gone over all the settings
over and over again and it just wont work in going to an outside server.
I can start xwall to run as the servr inbound and outbound smtp client
and it works, i have to set listserv to listen on port 24 as xwall
requires that. The messages come in thru xwall are process by smtpl and
listserv and our sent back to wall and then out to the world. Below is
the log clip i have when not using wall messages come in thru smtpl and
they die in listserv.
