Surely you are jesting? HTML is a  simplified version of SGML, which is a
slightly modified  version of IBM's  GML (ie SCRIPT). It  looks different
visually due  to using <xxx> instead  of :xxx. Ironically, I  never liked
this :xxx. business, and I used to  redefine the GML and MCS markers so I
could use <xxx> in SCRIPT, way before SGML and HTML.
