Remember:
 
News is News, and mail is mail -- the fact that they
intercommunicate at all is a wonderous thing, let alone that
they sing in harmony (most of the time).
 
The paradigms that each presupposes are different -- that
doesn't mean things can't (won't) be improved, but only up
to some point.
 
SPAM pushes beyond the envelope's edge causing a basic
dilemma.  Some amount of list-owner (moderator) time can
ameliorate this, but I seriously doubt that automation
processes can provide total and satisfactory relief to all
of good will.
